I have been drawing and painting since I was a little boy. I have always been inspired to draw and paint. When I was a teenager, I earned enough money from my paper route to pay for a correspondence course with Famous Artist School. I learned much, and continued with my drawing and painting. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa where I learned from some very knowledgeable teachers. It was there that I developed my passion for watercolor painting.
Although I have done oil paintings, etchings, sculptures and print-making, watercolors turned into my medium of choice. My watercolor paintings are an attempt to take ordinary scenes or subjects and transform them into something new, unique and interesting. I try to do this through the use of color first, followed by adding contrast between the highlights and shadows, by painting with hard edges and soft edges, using soft, subtle blends within the colors, and letting the water do the work whenever possible. It’s my intent to keep your eyes moving around the painting, so that they never settle or focus on only one part of a painting. The happy accidents that occur beyond my control, the luminous effects obtained with the build up of colors in transparent layers, how the paint reacts to the amount of water used, and even how they dry, create an always interesting and never repeatable piece. Every painting has it's own unique identity and character.
I have been painting watercolors for over 30 years now, and I find my inspiration in the beauty and colors of nature and the world around me. I paint floral watercolors, including roses, irises, and ivy. I also have landscape watercolors of the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rainier, a red barn in winter, a covered bridge with autumn colors, a portrait of a proud peacock, and others. Please feel free to browse around. I hope you enjoy my work. And if you have any comments or feedback, I would love to hear them. Thanks!
